Which BactoFlor® products are available?
The following BactoFlor® products are currently available:
BactoFlor® Basis consists of four complementary key strains specific to the small and large intestine, at a concentration of 6 billion CFU (colony-forming units). It supports the microbiota with a basic spectrum of physiological lactic acid-producing bacterial cultures.
BactoFlor® 10/20 is available for periods of increased demand or short-term use as a high-concentration microbiotic. It consists of 10 key strains representing the four most important genera of lactic acid bacteria and is highly concentrated at 20 billion CFU. As a multi-species microbiotic, BactoFlor® 10/20 reaches both the small and large intestine.
BactoFlor® for children contains a mixture of bacterial cultures for the small and large intestine tailored to the gut flora of children up to 12 years of age and is concentrated at 4 billion CFU per gram according to age. BactoFlor® for children is supplied with a measuring spoon for dosing and is an easily soluble, pleasant-tasting powder.
BactoFlor® vag contains 5 natural lactic acid bacteria of the vaginal flora at a concentration of 10 billion CFU per capsule. The strains were selected with regard to their natural occurrence in the vaginal flora.
BactoFlor® AB combines eleven complementary bacterial cultures of the small and large intestine with the yeast culture Saccharomyces boulardii and is highly concentrated at 30 billion CFU per capsule (28 billion from bacterial cultures, 2 billion from Saccharomyces boulardii). It is designed for short-term use – for example during a course of antibiotics. As cofactors it contains vitamin D₃ and zinc, which contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
BactoFlor® AB children follows the same concept – eleven bacterial cultures combined with the yeast culture Saccharomyces boulardii – but is tailored specifically to children aged 4 and over and has an age-appropriate concentration of 8 billion CFU per capsule (7 billion from bacterial cultures, 1 billion from Saccharomyces boulardii). The bacterial spectrum is geared to the child's gut flora and contains, for example, Bifidobacterium infantis. As a cofactor it contains vitamin D₃, which contributes to the normal function of the immune system in children, complemented by zinc.
BactoFlor® Liver is a triple complex of 13 complementary bacterial cultures of the small and large intestine, milk thistle extract and the vitaminoid choline. The cultures were selected with regard to the so-called gut-liver axis. With 10 billion CFU per daily dose of two capsules it is study-compliant in concentration; choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function.
BactoFlor® Nerves is a triple complex of three complementary bacterial cultures, a saffron extract and the complete spectrum of the eight B vitamins. The cultures were selected with regard to the so-called gut-brain axis. With 12 billion CFU per daily dose of two capsules it is study-compliant in concentration.
BactoFlor® omni is the broad-spectrum microbiotic of the range: it unites 75 complementary microcultures from 30 species of microorganisms, supplemented with inactive microcultures (postbiotics) and the dietary fibre inulin. With 30 billion CFU per capsule it offers a particularly high concentration and is modelled on the natural species diversity of the gut microbiome.
BactoFlor® SIB is specifically geared towards the small intestine (small intestine bacteria) and combines four typical bacterial cultures of the small intestinal flora with the yeast culture Saccharomyces boulardii. With 10 billion CFU per capsule (8 billion from bacterial cultures, 2 billion from Saccharomyces boulardii) it is highly concentrated. Unlike the multi-species products, it does not contain inulin.
When and how do I take BactoFlor®?
It is recommended to take BactoFlor® Basis, BactoFlor® 10/20 and BactoFlor® for children after a meal, as the microcultures the contain can survive gastric emptying undamaged from a pH of 3 and can then develop their full microbiotic activity in the gut.
BactoFlor® vag should be taken approximately 15–30 minutes before a meal. As the cultures contained in BactoFlor® vag are designed to reach the vaginal flora, a delayed-release capsule is used for this product, and so the directions for use are modified.
All BactoFlor® capsule products are taken with a little liquid.
BactoFlor® for children may be dissolved in liquid or mixed with any unheated beverages or food.
What are the special features of BactoFlor®?
BactoFlor® has the following special features:
Gastric acid-resistant key strains
BactoFlor® contains particularly robust bacterial cultures that have been shown to exhibit natural gastric acid stability and thus excellent microbiotic effectiveness.
As key strains, the bacterial cultures possess particularly important microbiotic properties.
High concentration per unit
All BactoFlor® products have high, study-compliant concentrations and ensure an optimal availability of bacterial cultures according to need.
The number of CFUs is another important criterion for the effectiveness of a microbiotic, as well as its price-performance ratio.
Storage stability through

As microorganisms, bacterial cultures are metabolically active, so are subject to a constant loss of activity and concentration during storage. One of the methods used to maintain the high concentration in BactoFlor® until the time of intake, is micro-encapsulation using an innovative process.
→ High-barrier protective blisters
Active microbiotic cultures are particularly susceptible to external influences such as oxygen, water vapour or heat during the storage period, causing them to rapidly lose their metabolic activity. All BactoFlor® products in capsule form are packaged in a premium-quality protective blister. This packaging provides the highest possible barrier of all packaging materials and enables maximum protection of the cultures against harmful oxygen and water vapour.
Protection of this kind is of particular importance for the rich bifidobacteria content (known as anaerobes, i.e., bacteria of the colon living under exclusion of oxygen). This effectively prevents loss of activity due to external influences.
Can the BactoFlor® products be dissolved in liquids?
The Bactoflor® capsules can be opened and the contents dissolved in liquid without loss of effect.
Our BactoFlor® for children may also be dissolved in milk or dairy products.
It should only be noted that the drink or food should not be warmer than room temperature and should be taken immediately.
Is BactoFlor® vegan?
All BactoFlor® products are free from animal ingredients and are suitable for a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Is BactoFlor® suitable for people with food intolerances?
All BactoFlor® products are gluten-free and free from artificial flavours and colours and sweeteners. They are suitable for people who are intolerant to lactose, histamine and soya. Non-GMO
How long can BactoFlor® products be taken?
All BactoFlor® products contain natural bacterial cultures and are therefore suitable for long-term use. However, the duration of use depends on the intended purpose. The duration varies from several weeks to build-up gut flora to short-term use during antibiotic therapy.
This is why we offer a range of BactoFlor® products at different concentrations.
Why is there no activation time for BactoFlor® products?
BactoFlor® capsules do not have to be opened. The residence time in the stomach is sufficient for the BactoFlor® bacterial cultures to reactivate from their freeze-dried state to trigger the desired microbiotic effects.
Good to know: Nearly all positive high-quality clinical studies with microbiotic cultures (known as RCTs - randomised double-blind studies) were conducted without an activation time and in adult capsule form.
Are the bacterial cultures used purely human strains or are animal strains also included?
The strains contained in the BactoFlor® products are all of human origin, with the exception of Lactobacillus plantarum, which is of plant (fermentative) origin. No strains of animal origin are included.
What is the viable cell count at the expiry date of BactoFlor®?
A special feature of all BactoFlor® products is that we declare the stated number of viable organisms for the end of the shelf life, which is also demonstrated by stability studies. This is also ensured by the protective blister packaging, because it prevents both oxygen and water vapour from coming into contact with the product.
Why are the BactoFlor® products packed in a blister and not in a bottle?
Our BactoFlor® products are packaged in protective blisters according to the highest pharmaceutical packaging standards, so no oxygen or water vapour comes into contact with the product during the storage period.
This ensures that the full activity of the bacterial cultures is maintained during the storage period and that their metabolism reactivates only when they are taken.
The blister also allows a practical and hygienic individual dispensing of the product.
How must the BactoFlor® products be stored?
All BactoFlor® products should be stored cool and below 25˚C, dry and out of the reach of young children. The capsules should be stored in the protective blister until consumed.
For BactoFlor® for children, once opened, the bottle should be kept tightly closed in the refrigerator and used in accordance with the stated shelf life. Do not expose to heat or direct sunlight.
Can I open the capsule if I do not want to swallow it whole?
Yes. The comparatively small BactoFlor® capsule (approx. 18 x 6 mm) can also be opened and its contents added to unheated food or drinks. It is only important that the food or drinks are not hot, as high temperatures can reduce the viability of the microcultures.
BactoFlor® AB: Should I wait between taking antibiotics and BactoFlor® AB?
Yes. If you take BactoFlor® AB or BactoFlor® AB children together with an antibiotic, leave 2 to 3 hours between the antibiotic and BactoFlor® AB or BactoFlor® AB children. Once you have finished the antibiotics, you can use up the pack by taking one capsule a day after a meal.
How does BactoFlor® Liver differ from the other BactoFlor® products?
BactoFlor® Liver is a triple complex: it combines 13 bacterial cultures with milk thistle extract and the vitaminoid choline. The multi-species products BactoFlor® Basis, 10/20 and omni, by contrast, contain exclusively bacterial cultures (in some cases supplemented with the dietary fibre inulin) and are geared towards the general supply of the gut flora. BactoFlor® Liver additionally provides the vitaminoid choline.
What are the "inactive microcultures" in BactoFlor® omni?
In addition to the 75 active microcultures, BactoFlor® omni also contains inactive forms of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. These are inactivated bacteria or their components. In microbiome science, such preparations have been referred to as postbiotics since the ISAPP consensus definition of 2021. They are a research field in their own right and differ from the active microcultures in their characteristics.
Does BactoFlor® SIB contain a prebiotic dietary fibre such as inulin?
No. Unlike BactoFlor® Basis, 10/20 and omni, BactoFlor® SIB does not contain inulin. The formula deliberately concentrates on the combination of four small-intestine-specific bacterial cultures and the yeast culture Saccharomyces boulardii. Anyone looking for a microbiotic with additional dietary fibre will find it in the multi-species products of the range.
How does BactoFlor® SIB differ from the multi-species products in the range?
BactoFlor® SIB is specifically geared towards microcultures of the small intestine – hence the name (small intestine bacteria). The formula combines four typical representatives of the small intestinal flora with the yeast culture Saccharomyces boulardii. The multi-species products BactoFlor® Basis, 10/20 and omni, by contrast, cover a broader spectrum of representatives of the small and large intestine flora and are designed for general, long-term supply.
